Building an ERP solutions leader for the trucking industry

TMW’s revenues grew by more than 20% annually over the investment period

Founded in 1983, TMW is a leading provider of enterprise management software for the surface transportation service industry, including logistics, trucking, and heavy-duty repair and maintenance. TMW’s solutions enable companies to improve operational efficiencies, enhance transactional velocity, deliver superior customer service, and ensure long-term profitability.  With offices in Cleveland, Raleigh, Indianapolis, Dallas, Nashville, Oklahoma City, and Vancouver, TMW serves more than 2,300 diverse customers managing more than 1.2 million assets worldwide.

After spending considerable time evaluating vertically-focused software solutions, Pamlico proactively approached the founder of TMW, Tom Weisz, in early 2005. Tom had been considering a sale and eventual retirement from the business, and was looking for a partner to help him create a smooth transition and greater opportunities for the employees. In the fall of 2005, Pamlico was chosen as his preferred partner, and we quickly worked to identify a new seasoned leader and to implement an organic and acquisition growth strategy.  In partnership with Tom, we recruited new President and CEO, David Wangler, who possessed extensive experience in the supply chain, manufacturing, and logistics software arena and was excited to leverage TMW as a unique growth platform. 

Under Dave’s leadership, TMW’s management team sourced and closed five add-on acquisitions while investing heavily in targeted R&D efforts. This created a broader product offering and opened up new addressable markets, including third-party logistics and private fleet management. As a result of these successful organic and strategic M&A initiatives, TMW’s revenues grew by more than 20% annually over the investment period. The company emerged as the dominant software vendor to the transportation industry.  Among the many accolades received over this period, TMW was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the 5,000 Fastest Growing Private Companies in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and as one of Inbound Logistics’ Top 100 Logistics IT Providers in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012.

In conjunction with Dave and the TMW team, Pamlico negotiated a sale of the company to Trimble Navigation, Ltd. in October 2012 for a purchase price of $335 million, exiting a highly-successful and dynamic investment.
